The journey runs east across Uttar Pradesh and the state's network of modern expressways has made it a smooth, if long, drive.

Either way, plan for around nine to ten hours of driving, so the road journey is a long day.

What is the best route from Delhi to Prayagraj?

The quickest routes now use the new Ganga Expressway, part of the impressive chain of high-speed expressways across Uttar Pradesh. The route heads east from Delhi and the expressway network, including the Agra-Lucknow Expressway, links up to bring Prayagraj within about nine hours by road.

These modern, access-controlled roads have made the drive far smoother than it once was, with good fuel and food stops along the way, but at nearly 700 km it remains a full day behind the wheel and a serious undertaking. Many travellers therefore prefer to fly or take the train or break the journey with an overnight stop at Agra or Lucknow to see the sights along the way.

Is Prayagraj a day trip from Delhi?

No, it is too far for a comfortable day trip. At nearly 700 km and around nine hours each way by road, a Delhi to Prayagraj day trip would mean eighteen or more hours of driving, leaving no time for the Sangam and the city's sights. It is far better planned as an overnight or as part of a wider pilgrimage circuit.

Happily, Prayagraj is easy to reach quickly. With direct flights and excellent train connections from Delhi, most travellers fly or take an overnight train, spend a day or two at the Sangam and the city's monuments and return at leisure, which is far more rewarding than a long day of driving. A day or two lets you take the sunrise boat ride to the confluence, visit the fort, Anand Bhawan and the temples and soak up the atmosphere of this ancient city without rushing and if you have longer, continue on to nearby Varanasi.

Can you fly from Delhi to Prayagraj?

Yes and flying is by far the fastest way. Prayagraj Airport at Bamrauli, about 13 to 15 km from the Sangam and city, has direct flights from Delhi, taking only around one hour fifteen minutes in the air. The airport has grown greatly in recent years, especially around the Kumbh and now connects Prayagraj to many Indian cities.

For most travellers from Delhi, especially those short on time, flying is the natural choice, letting you land and reach the Sangam within an hour of arriving. During the Kumbh, flight frequency rises sharply and the airport becomes very busy, so book early; outside the mela, a morning flight out and an evening flight back makes even a quick pilgrimage comfortable, though a night or two lets you see the city's monuments as well.

Is there a train from Delhi to Prayagraj?

Yes. Prayagraj is a major railway hub and it is very well connected to Delhi:

• Prayagraj Junction: the main station, about 10 km from the Sangam, served by fast and comfortable trains.

• Fast trains: the Prayagraj Express and other premium and Vande Bharat services link Delhi and Prayagraj efficiently.

• Overnight options: several trains run overnight, so you can sleep through the journey and arrive fresh in the morning.

The train is a comfortable and affordable option and Prayagraj has several stations, so there is plenty of choice of trains and timings. Booking ahead is wise and absolutely essential during the Magh Mela and Kumbh, when demand is enormous and seats sell out weeks in advance.

Where is Prayagraj and the Triveni Sangam?

Prayagraj, known as Allahabad until it was renamed, sits in southern Uttar Pradesh at one of the most sacred spots in all of Hinduism: the Triveni Sangam, the confluence of the Ganga, the Yamuna and the mythical, unseen Saraswati river. Its very name, Prayag, means the place of sacrifice or confluence and for thousands of years it has been revered as a Tirtharaj, the king of pilgrimage sites. Here pilgrims take a holy dip, believed to cleanse sins and grant liberation and boats carry devotees out to the exact point where the waters meet.

The Sangam is the beating heart of the city and its spiritual life and a visit here, especially at sunrise, is deeply moving. You can see the clear green Yamuna meet the wider, siltier Ganga, their different colours flowing side by side before mingling and join the pilgrims on the ghats and boats, a timeless scene of Indian faith. Priests perform rituals on wooden platforms in the shallows, birds wheel overhead and the whole place hums with devotion, making even a short visit unforgettable.

The Kumbh Mela

Prayagraj is world-famous as the principal host of the Kumbh Mela, the largest human gathering on Earth. Held at the Sangam, the mela draws tens of millions of pilgrims to bathe in the sacred waters at the astrologically auspicious time, when the positions of the planets are believed to make the confluence especially holy. Sadhus, saints and akharas process to the river for the great bathing days and a vast temporary city of tents rises on the sands to house the multitudes.

• The Maha Kumbh 2025: the most recent great Kumbh, held from 13 January to 26 February 2025, was the largest gathering in human history, drawing hundreds of millions of pilgrims over its weeks, an event of almost unimaginable scale.

• The cycle: a Kumbh is held at Prayagraj periodically, with a Purna or Maha Kumbh roughly every twelve years and an Ardh Kumbh about halfway between, so the next major melas at Prayagraj are some years away.

• The Magh Mela: every winter, in the Hindu month of Magh, a large annual mela takes place at the Sangam, a smaller but still remarkable spectacle of faith that gives a taste of the Kumbh in the years between the great gatherings.

If your visit coincides with a mela, expect vast crowds and plan far ahead for transport and accommodation, but also an unforgettable, humbling experience of devotion on a scale seen nowhere else in the world.

Beyond the Sangam, Prayagraj is rich in history and heritage:

• Allahabad Fort: the great fort built by Emperor Akbar in the 16th century beside the Sangam, home to the ancient Ashoka Pillar, the revered Akshayavat or immortal banyan tree and the underground Patalpuri temple. Parts are under army control, so check access.

• Anand Bhawan: the elegant former home of the Nehru family, now a fascinating museum of India's freedom struggle, set in lovely grounds, alongside the neighbouring Swaraj Bhawan.

• Khusro Bagh: a peaceful, walled Mughal garden with the beautiful sandstone tombs of Prince Khusrau, his mother and sister, a quiet oasis in the city.

• Bade Hanuman Temple: also called Lete Hanuman, the temple of the huge reclining Hanuman near the Sangam, a much-loved shrine believed to be submerged when the Ganga floods.

• All Saints Cathedral: a striking Gothic-style colonial-era church, one of the finest in India, also known as Patthar Girja.

When is the best time to visit Prayagraj?

The best time to visit Prayagraj is October to March, when the weather is pleasant for the Sangam, boat rides and sightseeing. Winter is also the season of the Magh Mela and, in its years, the Kumbh, so it is the most spiritually vibrant time, though also the most crowded.

Summers, from April to June, are very hot, so if you travel then, plan for early mornings and evenings by the river. The monsoon swells the rivers dramatically, sometimes affecting the Sangam and boat access when the waters are high. For a comfortable visit, aim for the cooler months from October to March and start early for the magical sunrise at the confluence, when the light on the water and the gathering pilgrims make for an unforgettable scene.
