Either way, plan for around nine and a half to ten and a half hours of driving, so the road journey is a long day.

What is the best route from Delhi to Ayodhya?

The quickest routes now use the new Ganga Expressway, part of the impressive chain of high-speed expressways across Uttar Pradesh. The route heads east from Delhi and the expressway network, including the Agra-Lucknow and Purvanchal expressways, links up to bring Ayodhya within about nine and a half hours by road.

These modern, access-controlled roads have made the drive far smoother than it once was, with good fuel and food stops along the expressways, but at nearly 700 km it remains a full day behind the wheel. Many pilgrims therefore prefer to fly or take the train or break the journey with a stop at Agra or Lucknow along the way.

Is Ayodhya a day trip from Delhi?

No, it is too far for a comfortable day trip. At nearly 700 km and around nine and a half hours each way by road, a Delhi to Ayodhya day trip would mean nineteen or more hours of driving, leaving no time for a meaningful darshan. It is far better planned as an overnight trip or as part of a wider pilgrimage circuit.

The good news is that Ayodhya is now very easy to reach quickly. With direct flights and good train connections from Delhi, most pilgrims fly or take an overnight train, spend a day or two for darshan and the city's sights and travel back at leisure. This is far more rewarding than a rushed day of driving and it lets you experience the Ram Mandir, the Saryu ghats and the temples without exhaustion. For families and older pilgrims especially, the flight or the overnight train makes the whole pilgrimage gentle and comfortable.

Can you fly from Delhi to Ayodhya?

Yes and flying is by far the fastest and most convenient way. Ayodhya's Maharishi Valmiki International Airport, about 10 to 12 km from the temple, has direct flights from Delhi, taking only around one hour twenty minutes in the air. This has transformed access to the city since the airport opened.

Frequent flights and the airport's closeness to the Ram Mandir make flying the natural choice for most pilgrims from Delhi, especially those with limited time, letting you land and be at the temple within the hour. The Maharishi Valmiki International Airport is one of the newest in India, built as part of Ayodhya's transformation and it has put the holy city within easy reach of not just Delhi but many other cities too, so it fits neatly into a wider itinerary. Is there a train from Delhi to Ayodhya?

Yes. Ayodhya is well connected by rail and the Ayodhya Dham Junction station is only about 2 km from the Ram Mandir, wonderfully convenient. Delhi has direct and connecting trains to Ayodhya, including overnight services that let you sleep through the journey and arrive fresh for a morning darshan.

The train is a comfortable and affordable option and with the station so close to the temple, just a short auto or walk away, it is a popular choice for pilgrims who want to step off and reach the Ram Mandir with minimal fuss. Booking ahead is wise, as trains to Ayodhya are in high demand, especially around Ram Navami and Diwali, when the city sees its largest crowds and seats sell out well in advance.

Where is Ayodhya and the Ram Mandir?

Ayodhya sits on the banks of the sacred Saryu river in Uttar Pradesh and it is revered as the birthplace of Lord Ram, one of Hinduism's most beloved deities and the hero of the epic Ramayana. Ram Mandir darshan: timings and important advice

Darshan at the Ram Mandir is open through the day, typically in a morning and an evening session and the exact timings shift a little by season, so reconfirm before you visit. Special aartis take place at set times and these can be attended with a pass.

Here is the most important advice, which we give clearly for your protection, because any major pilgrimage attracts people looking to profit from the faithful:

• Darshan is free: entry for regular darshan at the Ram Mandir is free of charge. You do not need to pay anyone for ordinary darshan.

• Official aarti passes only: passes for the aartis are issued only through the official temple trust channels, such as the official Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra website. Book only there.

• Beware of scams: ignore anyone offering paid darshan, VIP entry or tickets for a fee outside the official system, as these are not genuine. Do not fall for touts.

• Travel light: phones, bags and many items are not allowed inside, with facilities to deposit them, so carry as little as possible.

• Expect queues: on busy days and festivals the darshan line can be very long, so arrive early and allow time.

When is the best time to visit Ayodhya?

The best time to visit Ayodhya is October to March, when the weather is pleasant for temple visits and walking the city. Two festivals are especially spectacular: Ram Navami, marking Lord Ram's birth, usually in March or April and Deepotsav around Diwali, when Ayodhya lights up with lakhs of lamps along the Saryu in a breathtaking display, though both bring enormous crowds.

Summers, from April to June, are very hot, so plan for early mornings and evenings and carry water. The monsoon brings a fuller Saryu and a fresh, green calm, a quieter time to visit between the big festivals. Whenever you visit, an early start for darshan beats both the heat and the longest queues and giving Ayodhya a full day or two lets you see the riverside temples and the evening Saryu Aarti properly rather than rushing through.
