Quick Answer
A 7-day Golden Triangle tour is the relaxed way to see Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, with time to spare for an extension like a Ranthambore tiger safari or the holy town of Pushkar. A typical week gives two days to Delhi, a Taj sunrise and Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri on the way to Jaipur, two days for the Pink City, and a flexible extra day.
seven days turns the Golden Triangle from a dash into a proper holiday. You get two unhurried days in Delhi, a real Taj Mahal sunrise in Agra, the great stop at Fatehpur Sikri, two full days in Jaipur, and, crucially, a spare day or two to add something the shorter tours cannot fit, most popularly a tiger safari at Ranthambore or the lake and temples of Pushkar. It is the version I recommend to anyone who can spare the week, because nothing is rushed.
I was born in Delhi, and in 11 years running the Golden Triangle for Experience My India I have built this seven-day version for travelers who want to see the circuit properly and add a little of Rajasthan beyond it. It is my favourite length to guide, because there is time to breathe. Here is the day-by-day seven-day itinerary, the best ways to use the extra days, and how to travel it.

The day-by-day 7-day itinerary
Day 1: Arrive in Delhi
Arrive in Delhi, transfer to your hotel and take it easy after the journey. If you land early and have energy, a gentle first outing, India Gate in the evening light or a quiet garden tomb, eases you in without overloading day one. Rest well; the week ahead is full.
Day 2: Delhi sightseeing
Give Delhi a full day, split between its two halves: the Mughal Old City, with the Red Fort, Jama Masjid and the lanes of Chandni Chowk, and imperial New Delhi, with India Gate, the towering Qutub Minar and the serene Humayun's Tomb. Our guide to places to visit in Delhi lays out the options, and remember the Red Fort and the big temples close on Mondays.
Day 3: Delhi to Agra
Drive to Agra on the Yamuna Expressway, about four hours, arriving by early afternoon. See the mighty Agra Fort, then head to Mehtab Bagh across the river for a golden sunset view of the Taj Mahal. There is more to the city than the Taj, as our guide to places to visit in Agra shows. Overnight in Agra so you are ready for a dawn start.
Day 4: Agra to Jaipur via Fatehpur Sikri
Be at the Taj Mahal for sunrise, the finest hour to see it; check Taj Mahal timings and ticket price and note it is closed on Fridays. Then drive towards Jaipur, stopping at Fatehpur Sikri guide, Akbar's abandoned capital, and the thousand-year-old Chand Baori stepwell. Arrive in Jaipur in the evening.
Day 5: Jaipur sightseeing
A full day in the Pink City: the hilltop Amber Fort at opening, then the City Palace, the honeycomb Hawa Mahal and the giant instruments of Jantar Mantar, with time for the bazaars. Our guide to places to visit in Jaipur and Jaipur itinerary 2-3 days help you shape the day to your pace.
Day 6: Ranthambore, Pushkar or a Jaipur day trip
This is the day the shorter tours cannot give you. The most popular choice is a tiger safari at Ranthambore National Park, about three to four hours from Jaipur, ideally with a night there for a morning and afternoon drive. Alternatively, spend the day at the holy lakeside town of Pushkar with its Brahma temple, explore the painted havelis of the Shekhawati region at Mandawa, or simply take a relaxed second day in and around Jaipur. Choose the one that suits your interests.
Day 7: Jaipur to Delhi
After a final morning, whether returning from your extension or enjoying one last look at Jaipur, drive back to Delhi, about five to six hours, in time for an onward flight or a final night in the capital. The triangle closes where it began, but after a full week rather than a rushed few days.
Ways to spend the extra days
The beauty of seven days is the flexibility, and these are the additions I recommend most. Ranthambore National Park is the classic choice for anyone hoping to see a wild tiger, best enjoyed overnight so you can take both a morning and an afternoon safari. Pushkar, with its sacred lake, ghats and rare Brahma temple, is a soulful contrast to the forts and palaces, and hosts its famous camel fair each November. The Shekhawati town of Mandawa, dense with painted merchant havelis, is a quieter, characterful detour. And if you want to go further, Udaipur, the city of lakes, makes a wonderful extension, though it is best reached by a short flight rather than a long drive within a week.
Why 7 days is the relaxed way to do the Golden Triangle
Seven days is for travelers who would rather savour the trip than sprint it. Compared with the fast Golden Triangle tour 3 days, or even the classic four-day plan in our Golden Triangle tour itinerary, a week means a genuine Taj sunrise without a pre-dawn scramble, two proper days in Jaipur, and the space to add a tiger safari or a holy town. If your schedule allows the extra days, this is the version that leaves you feeling you have truly seen North India rather than glimpsed it.
How to travel and what it costs
A private car with a driver is the natural way to do a seven-day tour, giving you door-to-door comfort, early starts and the freedom to stop. For the Ranthambore leg, the safaris themselves are booked separately in the park's own open Gypsy or Canter vehicles by zone, so it is worth arranging those in advance, especially in peak season. Costs depend mostly on your choice of hotels and whether you travel privately or in a small group, and a safari extension adds park and vehicle fees, so rather than quote a figure that dates quickly, tell us your plans and we will price it honestly.
Best time and what to know
Travel between October and March for the most comfortable weather across all three cities. If you are adding Ranthambore, note that the park's safari zones are generally open from around October to June and closed during the monsoon, so time your visit accordingly, and if Pushkar's camel fair appeals, it falls in November. As on any Golden Triangle trip, never schedule your Agra day on a Friday, when the Taj Mahal is closed, keep Delhi's monuments off your Monday, and buy the Jaipur composite ticket at your first stop there.
