Quick Answer
To plan a Jaipur trip, allow 2 to 3 days, visit between October and March, and reach the city by a 5 to 6 hour drive from Delhi, or by train or a short flight. Base yourself in the Pink City or a palace hotel, and see the Amber Fort, City Palace, Hawa Mahal and Jantar Mantar.
planning a Jaipur trip comes down to a few decisions: how long to go, when, how to get there, where to stay and what to see. Two to three days is ideal, October to March is the best season, and the city is an easy five to six hour drive from Delhi or a short flight or train ride. Base yourself in or near the walled Pink City, give day one to the Amber hill forts and day two to the palaces and bazaars, and you have the makings of a perfect trip. This planner walks you through each piece.

How to reach Jaipur
From Delhi and Agra by road
Jaipur is about 280 km from Delhi, a five to six hour drive on the NH 48 highway, and about 240 km from Agra, roughly four and a half hours; our Agra to Jaipur road trip guide covers that leg and its stops. A private car with a driver is the most comfortable option and the easiest for reaching the hill forts once you arrive.
By air and train
Jaipur International Airport at Sanganer has good domestic connections and some international flights, about 12 to 15 km south of the city. By rail, fast trains including the Shatabdi and Vande Bharat link Delhi and Jaipur in around four and a half to five hours, and buses, including comfortable Volvo services, run frequently too. Any of these works well; the choice comes down to your budget and how much you want to stop along the way.
The best time to visit Jaipur
Come between October and March, when the weather is cool and clear and ideal for climbing the forts and wandering the old city. April to June is very hot, and the monsoon from July to September brings some rain but green scenery and lower prices. Our guide to the best time to visit Jaipur gives the month-by-month picture and the festival calendar.
How many days do you need in Jaipur?
Two days comfortably cover the highlights, the Amber hill forts on one day and the walled Pink City on the other, while a third day lets you slow down, shop, or add a day trip. Our guide to places to visit in Jaipur for 2 days sets out exactly what to see in that time. One day is possible but rushed, so aim for two if you can.
Where to stay in Jaipur
Choose the walled Pink City to be among the sights and bazaars, central C-Scheme for a modern, well-connected base, or a palace resort towards Amer for luxury and calm, and remember that Jaipur lets you sleep in a real maharaja's palace. Our guide to where to stay in Jaipur lists the best hotels by area and tier, from heritage havelis to the Rambagh Palace.
What to see: the top places
Jaipur's essentials are the hilltop Amber Fort, the City Palace Jaipur timings, the honeycomb Hawa Mahal, the stone observatory of Jantar Mantar, and Nahargarh Fort for sunset, with the floating Jal Mahal timings a lovely photo stop on the Amber road. Our full guide to places to visit in Jaipur covers every sight and how long to give each.
A sample Jaipur itinerary
The neatest plan splits the days by geography: day one for the forts in the northern hills, ending with sunset at Nahargarh, and day two for the walled-city palaces, observatory and bazaars. For a full day-by-day plan, follow our Jaipur itinerary 2-3 days, which scales from two days to three.
Getting around, food and shopping
Within Jaipur, autos and e-rickshaws are cheap for short hops, app cabs are easy, and a hired car with a driver is the most comfortable for the spread-out hill forts. Do not miss the food, pyaaz kachori, dal baati churma, a thali at the famous LMB, lassi, and a village-style dinner at Chokhi Dhani. And leave room for the bazaars: Johari Bazaar for jewellery, Bapu Bazaar for textiles and juttis, and Tripolia for lac bangles, where Jaipur's colour and craft are at their best.
How much does a Jaipur trip cost?
Jaipur suits every budget, from backpacker guesthouses and street food to palace hotels and fine dining, so the cost depends almost entirely on your choice of accommodation and how you travel. One money-saving tip that applies to everyone: buy the Jaipur composite ticket at your first monument, which covers Amber Fort, Hawa Mahal, Jantar Mantar, Nahargarh and the Albert Hall Museum on one ticket valid for two days. Rather than quote figures that date quickly, tell us your standard and we will price a trip honestly.
Jaipur travel tips
A few things make a Jaipur trip run smoothly. Buy the composite ticket, but note the City Palace has its own separate ticket. Start early, climbing Amber Fort at opening beats the heat and the crowds, and save Nahargarh for sunset. Hire only licensed, identity-carrying guides, since touts work the forts and bazaars. Dress modestly at temples, carry water in the warmer months, and book palace and heritage hotels well ahead, especially in the October-to-March peak and around the January festivals.
