Jal Mahal is a free, view-from-the-shore attraction, open every day of the week and best seen in daylight, roughly 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. It is a palace that appears to float in the middle of a lake and because it is not open to the public, you admire it from the promenade along the shore rather than going inside. Half an hour to an hour is plenty and it sits right on the road between Jaipur and the Amber Fort, so it is an easy and beautiful stop.

Jal Mahal timings and entry fee

Jal Mahal is a roadside viewing spot rather than a ticketed monument, so the details are simple.

There are no gates or ticket counters: you simply arrive at the promenade along the shore of Man Sagar Lake and the palace is there in the water before you. Because it is a daylight experience, the hours above are about the best light and safety rather than opening and closing times and the palace is beautifully floodlit in the evening if you pass by after dark.

Can you go inside Jal Mahal?

This is the question everyone asks and the answer is no. Jal Mahal is not open to the public, so you cannot walk through its rooms or visit its rooftop garden and boat rides across the lake to the palace are not currently offered to general visitors. It is enjoyed entirely from the shore, as a view and a photograph. That may sound limiting, but the palace floating on the water, especially with its reflection, is the whole point and it is genuinely lovely to look at. So come to admire and photograph it, not to tour it.

What is Jal Mahal?

Jal Mahal means Water Palace and that is exactly what it is: a five-storey palace of red sandstone standing in the middle of Man Sagar Lake, built in the Rajput and Mughal style. The lake was created centuries ago by damming a seasonal river and the palace was built and later restored by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II in the eighteenth century, the same ruler who founded Jaipur. Here is the magical part: when the lake is full, four of the palace's five storeys are underwater, so only the top floor shows above the surface, which is why it seems to float. In recent decades the lake and the palace were restored, bringing back the water, the gardens on the terrace and the birdlife.

The best time to visit Jal Mahal

For the finest view, come at sunrise or sunset, when the light is soft and warm and the still water gives a mirror-perfect reflection of the palace, the classic Jal Mahal photograph. Winter mornings, from November to February, add flocks of migratory birds on the lake. Harsh midday light is the least flattering, so plan around the end of the day. How to reach Jal Mahal

Jal Mahal sits on the Amer Road, the highway between Jaipur city and the Amber Fort, about six to seven kilometres north of the walled city, so it is right on the way to Amber and impossible to miss. Autos, cabs and cars reach the lakeside promenade easily and there is parking nearby. What to do at Jal Mahal

Give it thirty minutes to an hour. Walk the promenade, take in the palace and its reflection and get your photographs from a few angles. The lakeside is lively, with camels and horses done up for photos, vendors and snack stalls, so you can enjoy the bustle, ride a camel if you like and bargain gently if you buy anything. Watch the birds on the water, then move on to the forts. It is a short, sweet stop rather than a long visit, which is exactly what makes it easy to fit in.
