Either way, plan for around 4.5 hours of driving on the smooth NH44, one of India's best and busiest highways, though city traffic at each end, especially getting out of Delhi, can add a little time at the start.

What is the best route from Delhi to Chandigarh?

The best and fastest route from Delhi to Chandigarh is via NH44, the excellent national highway that runs straight north from Delhi through Sonipat, Panipat, Karnal and Ambala up to Chandigarh. At about 243 km and 4 hours 26 minutes, it is a smooth, fast and refreshingly straightforward drive on one of the very best highways in the whole country, mostly four to six lanes wide.

The road is a wide, well-maintained, expressway-standard highway for most of the way, with plenty of good places to stop for food along the route, including the famous cluster of roadside dhabas around Murthal, near the start of the journey just north of Delhi, long beloved by travellers for their hot buttery paranthas and chai. The main variable is city traffic at the Delhi end, so an early start helps you get clear of the capital's congestion quickly and enjoy a fast, smooth run north on the open highway. It is one of the easiest long drives out of Delhi, which is a large part of why Chandigarh is such a popular getaway.

Ways to travel from Delhi to Chandigarh

There are several excellent ways to make the journey, as Chandigarh is very well connected:

• By road: by private car or taxi, or by comfortable bus including the frequent Volvo coaches, taking around 4.5 hours on the fast NH44. A flexible, comfortable option, and by far the best if you plan to continue onward to the hills, as it keeps your vehicle and luggage with you.

• By train: Chandigarh is superbly served by fast trains from Delhi, including the quick and comfortable Shatabdi Express, which is one of the fastest and most pleasant ways to make the trip, covering it in around three and a half hours city centre to city centre.

• By air: you can fly from Delhi to Chandigarh in about an hour, the quickest option in the air, though once you factor in the airport transfers, check-in and security at each end, the total time saving over the fast train is fairly modest.

For most travellers, the fast train or a private car is the easiest choice: the Shatabdi train is especially quick and comfortable if Chandigarh itself is your destination, while a private car is best if you are continuing up into the hills, as it carries you seamlessly all the way from Delhi to Shimla or beyond without changing.

Things to do in Chandigarh

There is plenty to enjoy in this green, well-planned city:

• The Rock Garden: the world-famous garden created single-handedly over many years by Nek Chand from recycled materials, stones, broken tiles and industrial waste, a magical, sprawling wonderland of thousands of sculptures, waterfalls and interlinked courtyards, and by far Chandigarh's most iconic and beloved sight.

• Sukhna Lake: the beautiful, large man-made rain-fed lake at the very foot of the Shivalik hills, with a lovely long lakeside promenade, pedal and rowing boats, and a relaxed, breezy atmosphere, especially peaceful and pretty in the golden light of sunrise and sunset.

• The Rose Garden: the Zakir Hussain Rose Garden, one of the largest rose gardens in Asia, home to thousands of rose bushes of hundreds of varieties, a fragrant, colourful delight, especially in the spring flowering season.

• The Capitol Complex: Le Corbusier's monumental concrete government buildings, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, including the Secretariat, the High Court and the Legislative Assembly, along with the famous rotating Open Hand monument, a symbol of the city.

• Sector 17: the city's central plaza and its main shopping and dining hub, a lively, open, pedestrian-friendly space of shops, showrooms, restaurants and fountains, the buzzing social heart of Chandigarh, especially in the evenings.

• The gardens and museums: the city's many other gardens, such as the Terraced Garden and the Bougainvillea Garden, and its Government Museum and Art Gallery, add to a relaxed, green and cultured day out.

A day or two is enough to enjoy Chandigarh's highlights at a pleasant, unhurried pace, taking in the Rock Garden, the lake and a garden or two, and it is an easy, relaxing city to get around, being so well planned and green, with wide roads and little of the chaos of the older cities.

Chandigarh: gateway to the hills

One of Chandigarh's great roles, beyond being a fine city in itself, is as the gateway to the hills of Himachal Pradesh. It sits right at the foot of the mountains, where the plains meet the first Shivalik ranges, and the main roads and railways up to the hill stations all begin here, making it the natural launching point and stopover for any trip up into the hills.

Best time to visit Chandigarh

The best time to visit Chandigarh is October to March, when the weather is pleasant and comfortable for exploring the city's gardens, lakes and open spaces on foot at a relaxed pace. The winter is crisp, sunny and lovely, and the spring, especially February and March, is beautiful, when the Rose Garden and the city's many other gardens burst into bloom, and the annual Rose Festival is held.

Summers, from April to June, are hot on the plains, though the city's abundant greenery, its lake and its position right at the foot of the hills make it a little more bearable than the fierce heat of Delhi. The monsoon brings welcome rain and fresh, lush greenery to the gardens. • Consider the fast Shatabdi train, around 3.5 hours and very comfortable, if the city is your goal.
