The story of the museum begins in 1876, when the foundation stone was laid during the visit of the Prince of Wales, the future King Edward VII, to Jaipur and the hall was named in his honour. At first there was no clear purpose for the grand new building and for some years it stood without a defined role, until Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh II and later Sawai Madho Singh II decided it should house a museum of the region's art and craft.

One of the great pleasures of the Albert Hall is seeing it after dark. As night falls, the entire building is bathed in warm golden floodlights and its domes, arches and carvings glow spectacularly against the sky, reflected in the surrounding pools.
