1. Bhangarh Fort, the most haunted place in India

No list of haunted places in Jaipur begins anywhere but Bhangarh Fort. Located between Jaipur and Alwar, about 85 km from the city in the Aravalli hills, it is widely called the most haunted place in India, and it draws thrill-seekers and paranormal investigators from around the world.

The legend is famous. It is said a sorcerer, or tantrik, fell in love with the beautiful princess Ratnavati of Bhangarh, and tried to trick her with a black-magic potion. When his plot failed and he was killed, he cursed the fort and everyone in it, dooming the once-thriving town to ruin. To this day, locals say the roofless houses of Bhangarh cannot be roofed, as any roof built there is said to collapse.

The most striking fact is official: the Archaeological Survey of India has put up a board that legally prohibits entry to the fort between sunset and sunrise. Visitors and villagers speak of ghostly music, screams, the clinking of bangles and a heavy, watchful atmosphere after dark. By day, however, it is a fascinating, atmospheric ruin, and a popular day trip from Jaipur, often combined with the Chand Baori stepwell at Abhaneri. You can wander the ruined bazaars, temples and the old palace at the foot of the hills, and the setting, ringed by the Aravallis with a quiet pond nearby, is genuinely beautiful, curse or no curse.

2. Nahargarh Fort, the spirit on the hill

Perched dramatically on the Aravalli hills above Jaipur, Nahargarh Fort offers breathtaking views over the Pink City by day, and a shivery reputation by night. It is one of the most famous haunted places in the city itself.

The story goes back to its construction. The fort was built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, and during the work, the walls raised by day were said to collapse mysteriously overnight. It was believed the site belonged to the spirit of Nahar Singh Bhomia, a Rathore prince, who was disturbed and displeased. To appease him, the king built a small temple in his honour and named the fort Nahargarh after him, and the trouble stopped. Even today, some visitors speak of a sudden cold breeze or the feeling of being watched in the quiet corners.

3. Jal Mahal, the palace on the water

Rising from the middle of Man Sagar Lake, Jal Mahal is one of Jaipur's most romantic sights, a five-storey palace of which four floors lie submerged. Built as a hunting lodge in the 18th century, its serene beauty hides an eerier reputation.

Because the palace is closed to visitors and sits alone on the water, it has gathered its share of ghost stories. Locals have claimed to hear screams carried across the lake at night, and to see movement in the empty palace. Whether legend or trick of the wind, it adds a haunting mystery to an already atmospheric spot. By day, the lakeside is a lovely, popular place to admire the palace and the birdlife.

4. Jaigarh Fort, guardian of the treasure

Standing above Amer, the mighty Jaigarh Fort is famous for housing the world's largest wheeled cannon, and for a legend of hidden treasure. Jaipur's crown jewel, Amer Fort, is a magnificent, much-loved monument by day, but its age, its long dark passages and its secret tunnels have earned it a quieter, spookier folklore. The fort is connected to Jaigarh above by a hidden tunnel, and stories tell of strange whispers and echoes in its older, unlit corners.

6. Jagatpura, the eerie edge of the city

On the south-eastern edge of Jaipur, the Jagatpura area carries one of the city's strongest paranormal reputations in local lore. Once a quieter, more isolated stretch, it features in many lists of Jaipur's most haunted spots, with old stories of strange happenings and warnings against lingering in its lonelier corners after dark.

Much of Jagatpura today is a developed, ordinary part of the city, but the folklore persists, and it is one of the few Jaipur spots that come with a genuine "not alone at night" caution rather than a daytime sightseeing appeal.

Its many small windows, from which royal women once watched the world unseen, have given rise to visitor tales of soft whispers, the sound of anklets, distant giggles and sudden cool drafts in its corridors.

9. The Delhi-Jaipur Highway, the road ghost

Not every haunted tale is set in a fort. The Delhi-Jaipur highway, particularly around the Dudu stretch, has its own long-running road legend, sometimes called the bloody alley. Rounding out the list, the quiet hillside stretches and old, abandoned bungalows along parts of Amer Road have their own whispered reputation. A quick note for accuracy, since many lists mix these up. Some famous Rajasthan haunted places are not actually in or near Jaipur:

• Kuldhara: the cursed abandoned village is near Jaisalmer, roughly 550 km from Jaipur, not a Jaipur site.

• Brij Raj Bhavan Palace: the colonial palace with a soldier's ghost story is in Kota.

• Rana Kumbha Palace: the ruined palace with its secret chambers is in Chittorgarh.

• Visit forts before dusk: the old forts are large and confusing in low light, so daytime visits are safer for navigation.

• Do not go alone to isolated spots at night: places like Jagatpura and the Amer Road fringes are best avoided after dark, for ordinary safety.
