Before you explore what lies around it, the Taj Mahal deserves its due, since everything else radiates out from it. Built by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal, and completed in the mid-17th century, it is the finest expression of Mughal architecture in the world, a perfectly symmetrical vision in white marble that changes colour with the light through the day, from soft pink at dawn to dazzling white at noon and golden at sunset.

Give yourself at least a couple of hours inside the complex, taking in the great gateway, the char bagh gardens, the reflecting pool, the mosque and its mirror-image jawab, and of course the mausoleum itself with its intricate pietra dura inlay. A short drive: Agra Fort and Jama Masjid

A little way from the Taj lie two of Agra's grandest monuments, easily combined:

• Agra Fort: the magnificent red-sandstone fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the seat of Mughal power, from whose marble pavilions the imprisoned Shah Jahan is said to have gazed at the Taj in his final years. Within its mighty walls lie a palace-city of courtyards and halls, the elegant Diwan-i-Am and Diwan-i-Khas, the mirrored Sheesh Mahal, the graceful Khas Mahal, the red Jahangir Mahal, and the octagonal Musamman Burj, the tower where Shah Jahan spent his last days with a view of his wife's tomb. • Jama Masjid: the grand 17th century mosque near the fort, built by Shah Jahan's daughter Jahanara, often overlooked but well worth a look for its scale, its bold red-sandstone and marble facade, and its place in the heart of the bustling old city, right beside the Kinari Bazaar lanes.

The east-bank tombs

• Ram Bagh: believed to be the oldest Mughal garden in India, laid out by Babur, the founder of the dynasty, a tranquil riverside retreat of terraces, watercourses and shade.

A little further: Sikandra and beyond

A short drive out of the city centre brings more of Agra's Mughal grandeur:

• Akbar's Tomb at Sikandra: the vast, majestic mausoleum of the great emperor Akbar, set in walled gardens roamed by deer, antelope and playful monkeys. Its striking gateway, inlaid with coloured marble, and the tiered red-sandstone and marble tomb make it one of Agra's most impressive and peaceful complexes, and a fitting resting place for the empire's greatest ruler.

• Mariam's Tomb: the graceful, little-visited tomb of Akbar's wife near Sikandra, a quiet counterpoint to the grander monuments and rarely troubled by crowds.

How do you get around Agra's sights?

Because the sights spread out from the Taj across both banks of the Yamuna and out to Sikandra and Fatehpur Sikri, a car with a driver for the day is by far the easiest way to see them, saving hours compared with hailing autos between each stop. Within the immediate Taj area, remember that no polluting vehicles are allowed close to the monument to protect the marble, so you approach the gates on foot, by battery-operated shuttle, or by cycle rickshaw from the parking and drop-off points.

Around the rest of the city, autos and e-rickshaws are plentiful and cheap for short hops, and the growing Agra Metro is beginning to connect key points near the Taj and the Fort. How many days do you need in Agra?

One full day is enough to see the essential Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and a couple of nearby sights, which is why Agra works so well as a day trip from Delhi. But to enjoy the east-bank tombs, Sikandra and Fatehpur Sikri as well, and to see the Taj at both sunrise and sunset, two days is ideal.

When is the best time to visit?

The best time to visit the Taj and the sights around it is October to March, when Agra's weather is pleasant for sightseeing and the light is beautiful for the monuments. The Taj is closed on Fridays, so plan around that, and a sunrise visit gives you the softest light and the smallest crowds.

Summer, from April to June, is very hot, so aim for early mornings and evenings, and carry water and sun protection. The monsoon brings lush greenery and dramatic skies over the Taj, a fine if wetter time to visit, and the marble looks especially luminous against the grey clouds after a shower.
