Jaipur to Pushkar Distance: Routes, Time and How to Travel

Jaipur to Pushkar is a scenic drive of about 143 to 147 km, taking roughly two and three-quarter hours on the smooth NH 48 through Ajmer, since Pushkar lies just 15 km beyond it over a low range of hills. Pushkar is one of India's holiest and most charming towns, famous for its rare temple to Lord Brahma, its sacred lake ringed by bathing ghats and the vast camel fair each November, all wrapped in a laid-back, cafe-filled atmosphere. How far is Pushkar from Jaipur?

Pushkar is about 143 to 147 km from Jaipur by road and the drive takes roughly two hours and 45 minutes on NH 48. The route runs to Ajmer and then over the hills for the final 15 km into Pushkar, so it is essentially the Jaipur to Ajmer journey plus a short hop, a trip we cover in our Jaipur to Ajmer distance guide. The distance is almost the same in both directions and it is short enough for a day trip, though Pushkar and Ajmer together reward an overnight stay.

The direct NH 48 is the fastest and smoothest route both ways. The longer MDR 85 option adds distance and time and is only worth it if you are joining from that side, so for most travellers the straight NH 48 through Ajmer is the clear choice.

How to travel between Jaipur and Pushkar

A private car or taxi is the most convenient way, running door to door in under three hours and letting you stop in Ajmer for the dargah on the way. By train there is no useful direct service to Pushkar, so the practical route is to take one of the many fast trains from Jaipur to Ajmer, about two hours and then cover the last 15 km by taxi or bus in around half an hour. Frequent government and private buses also run from Jaipur to Ajmer and on to Pushkar. For a temple visit or a relaxed getaway, the car is easiest; for value, the train to Ajmer plus a short hop works well.

What to see and do in Pushkar

Pushkar packs a lot into a small, walkable town. Its centrepiece is the Jagatpita Brahma Mandir, one of the very few temples to Lord Brahma anywhere in the world and beside it lies the sacred Pushkar Lake, ringed by 52 bathing ghats where pilgrims come to pray. Climb or take the ropeway, to the hilltop Savitri Temple for sweeping sunset views, wander the Sadar Bazaar for silver, textiles and handicrafts and linger in the rooftop cafes that give the town its famous laid-back, backpacker charm. Each November, around Kartik Purnima, the town explodes into the Pushkar Camel Fair, a spectacular gathering of livestock, music, competitions and colour.

Best time to travel and tips

The pleasant season is October to March and the town is at its most spectacular during the November camel fair, though that is also its busiest and priciest time. Pushkar is a holy town, so it is strictly vegetarian and alcohol is not sold and modest dress is expected, especially at the temple and the ghats. At the lake, remove your shoes near the ghats and be wary of unofficial priests demanding money for a blessing. Book train tickets to Ajmer ahead, start early for a day trip and carry cash for the bazaar.
