Hawa Mahal is located at Badi Chaupar, on Hawa Mahal Road in the heart of Jaipur's old walled Pink City, in Rajasthan. In Hindi, to answer the common question, Hawa Mahal kahan sthit hai: it sits right on the main bazaar, about 5 km from Jaipur Junction railway station and around 12 km from the airport, at the edge of the City Palace complex to which it is joined. About Hawa Mahal

Hawa Mahal is not a palace in the usual sense but an elaborate five-storey facade, a screen wall added to the rear of the City Palace zenana so the royal women could look out onto the world. Its name, the Palace of Winds, comes from the way air flows through its 953 latticed windows, keeping it cool through the fierce Rajasthan summers. Shaped like a pyramid and said to resemble the crown of Lord Krishna, whom Sawai Pratap Singh worshipped, it blends Rajput and Mughal styles and has no staircases at all, only gentle ramps that once carried royal women in palanquins between the floors.

History of Hawa Mahal

The history of Hawa Mahal Jaipur begins in 1799, when Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, grandson of the city's founder Sawai Jai Singh II, commissioned the architect Lal Chand Ustad to build it as an extension of the royal City Palace. The age strictly observed purdah, so royal women could not be seen in public, yet they wished to watch the festivals, markets and processions of the Pink City. The answer was this honeycomb of screened windows, from which they could see everything while remaining invisible from the street. Hawa Mahal timings

Hawa Mahal is open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, including weekends and public holidays. Because the famous facade faces east, it catches the sunrise beautifully, so the light is at its best in the early morning, well before the gates open. The monument closes at 5:00 PM, though the illuminated exterior is lovely from the street after dark.

Hawa Mahal entry fee

The Hawa Mahal entry fee is ₹50 per person for Indian visitors and ₹200 per person for foreign tourists. Tickets are bought at the monument, and you enter from the rear, on the City Palace side, rather than from the famous street-facing facade. Best time to visit Hawa Mahal

For photographs, the best time is sunrise, roughly 6:00 to 7:30 AM, when the golden light hits the pink sandstone and the street is quiet. The classic shot is taken not from inside but from the cafes directly across the road, which open early for exactly this view. For the interior, arrive when the gates open, around 9:00 to 10:30 AM, to beat both the crowds and the heat. How to reach Hawa Mahal

Hawa Mahal sits in the middle of the old city, so it is easy to reach. The nearest metro is Badi Chaupar on the Pink Line, only a couple of hundred metres away, and autos and app cabs reach it directly. Tips for visiting Hawa Mahal

A few things make the visit better. Come at sunrise for photos from the cafes opposite, then enter the monument itself later in the morning through the rear entrance. Allow about 45 minutes to an hour inside to climb the ramps to the top for views over the Pink City and the City Palace. Wear comfortable shoes, carry water and small cash for the ticket, and dress modestly as at any Indian monument. Weekends and the middle of the day are busiest, so an early start pays off.
